What is Deadlight?

Deadlight is a 2012 sidescrolling survival horror cinematic platforming video game that tells the story of Randall Wayne, a former park ranger who sets out to find his family in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. Intended as a throwback to classic sidescrolling games of the 1980s and early 1990s, Deadlight features a 2.5D environment where the player character can move only from left-to-right and right-to-left, and is unable to enter any environments off the aligned path. Players must solve puzzles and avoid the many "Shadows" (zombies) they encounter, with limited options for combat using melee attacks or firearms with scarce ammunition. The game takes place in 1986 in the city of Seattle, where Randall has joined a group of survivors in search of the last remaining "Safe Point" on the Pacific Northwest, hoping to be reunited with his wife Shannon and daughter Lydia

Highlights

  • Emphasis on puzzle-solving and avoidance of zombies ("Shadows") rather than direct combat
  • Scarcity of ammunition and stamina management for melee and firearm attacks
  • Narrative focus on Randall's search for his missing family in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse
