What is Disk Utility?

Disk Utility is a comprehensive disk management tool developed by Apple for macOS. It provides a range of functionalities to assist users in managing their storage devices, including the ability to create, convert, compress, and encrypt disk images in various formats. Users can mount, unmount, and eject disks, enable or disable journaling, verify disk integrity, and repair damaged partitions, including those formatted for both Mac and Windows systems The utility also offers the capability to verify and repair permissions, erase, format, partition, and clone disks, as well as securely delete free space using a variety of data wiping algorithms. Disk Utility allows users to manage RAID sets, restore volumes from Apple Software Restore (ASR) images, and burn disk images to CD or DVD in HFS+ format.
