What is Gopher?

The Internet Gopher protocol enables distributed document search and retrieval. This protocol specification outlines the implementation details, lists existing client and server applications, and provides an overview for developing new ones. The protocol was originally documented by the University of Minnesota Microcomputer Center in 1991
