What is IPFS?

The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is a global, decentralized file system that combines elements of Git, BitTorrent, Kademlia, and the web. It provides a simple interface akin to the HTTP web, but with inherent permanence and versioning. IPFS allows users to access content via a unique, content-addressed identifier, rather than a location-based URL. This makes the system resilient to outages and changes, as content can be retrieved from multiple sources within the distributed network. Additionally, IPFS leverages blockchain technology to enable decentralized data archiving, storage, and distribution

Highlights

  • Content-addressed file system, allowing access to data via unique identifiers rather than location-based URLs
  • Distributed network that replicates and stores data across multiple nodes, providing resilience and redundancy
  • Leverages blockchain technology for decentralized data archiving, storage, and distribution
  • Versioning system that tracks changes to files over time
