What is jabberd?

The jabberd project has been completely rewritten from the ground up to be a scalable, architecturally sound XMPP server that supports the latest XMPP extension protocols developed by the XMPP Standards Foundation. Unlike the previous jabberd 1.x project, this new jabberd 2.x is a completely separate and distinct server implementation XMPP, the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, is an open Internet standard for XML-based real-time communications. Formalized under RFCs 3920 and 3921, XMPP powers a wide range of applications including instant messaging, presence, media negotiation, whiteboarding, collaboration, middleware, content syndication, and more The jabberd XMPP server is released under the GPLv2 license from the Free Software Foundation, allowing users complete freedom to use, modify, distribute, and even sell the server's source code and working installations. Apple's ChatServer, for example, is a modified version of jabberd 2.1. The project's source code is hosted on GitHub
