What is Jellyfin?

Jellyfin is a personal media server and client that provides users with a platform to manage and stream their media content. The project was initiated as a result of diverging philosophies between the Emby developers and the core Jellyfin team, leading to Jellyfin's emergence as a free software alternative to Emby and Plex. Jellyfin is built upon the .NET Core framework and is descended from Emby 3.5.2, offering cross-platform compatibility and the ability to build for a wide range of devices

Highlights

  • Cross-platform compatibility: Jellyfin aims to provide build facilities for every platform, ensuring users can access their media content on a variety of devices
  • Media management: Jellyfin serves as a personal media server, allowing users to centrally manage and organize their media files
  • Streaming capabilities: Jellyfin enables users to stream their media content from the dedicated server to their end-user devices, providing a seamless experience
  • Free software alternative: Jellyfin was developed as a response to Emby's decision to take their code closed-source, offering a free and open-source solution for media management and streaming.
