What is Microsoft Encarta?

Encarta was a comprehensive digital encyclopedia published by Microsoft from 1993 to 2009. The complete English version, Encarta Premium, contained over 62,000 articles complemented by a vast multimedia library of photos, illustrations, music clips, videos, interactivities, timelines, maps, and educational tools. The encyclopedia was available both online through a subscription service and on physical media such as DVD-ROMs and CD-ROMs. Many articles could also be accessed for free on the web, supported by advertisements. In 2009, Microsoft announced the discontinuation of Encarta's disc and online versions, citing the product's declining relevance in the digital age
