What is Mumble?

Mumble is an open-source, low-latency, and high-quality voice chat software designed primarily for use during gaming. It is built on top of Qt and Opus, with two main components: the client (Mumble) and the server (Murmur). The client is available on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS, while the server can be installed on any platform that supports Qt

Highlights

  • Low-latency audio suitable for gaming
  • High-quality audio
  • Positional audio support for certain games, allowing users to hear each other's voices from the direction they are positioned in-game and at varying volumes based on proximity
  • In-game overlay displaying users and who is currently speaking
  • Scripting interface using the Ice protocol, enabling web-based server management and automation (e.g., automatically switching users to team channels)
  • Official iOS client available, with a community-developed Android client also provided
  • Mumble was one of the first and most widely adopted free and open-source VoIP solutions, pioneering the combination of low-latency and high-quality audio for gaming applications. The project continues to be actively maintained and developed by a core team and the broader open-source community.
