What is Off-the-Record Messaging?

Off-the-Record (OTR) Messaging enables private conversations across various instant messaging platforms, including MSN, Gtalk, and Facebook, by incorporating encryption, authentication, deniability, and perfect forward secrecy. Users can exchange messages securely, with the assurance that their communications are protected from unauthorized access or interception. The application ensures the confidentiality and integrity of the exchanged information, while also providing features that preserve the privacy and anonymity of the participants

Highlights

  • Encryption: Applies strong cryptographic techniques to protect the content of messages from being accessed by unauthorized parties
  • Authentication: Verifies the identities of the participants in the conversation, ensuring that messages are exchanged between the intended parties
  • Deniability: Allows users to plausibly deny the existence or content of their communications, preserving their privacy
  • Perfect Forward Secrecy: Ensures that even if the long-term keys are compromised, the confidentiality of past communications is maintained.
