What is OpenToonz?
OpenToonz is a free and open-source software for producing 2D animations, based on the proprietary "Toonz" software used by renowned animation studio Studio Ghibli and others. Developed in cooperation with Digital Video S.p.A. and Studio Ghibli, this program aims to provide a new platform for connecting academic research with frontline animation production
Highlights
- Sequence number scanning: Efficiently scans in-between animation frames according to their sequence numbers, compatible with 4 types of scanning (black-and-white, colored, with or without binarization) and allows saving of scan settings for reproducible processes
- Digital painting: Offers anti-aliased lines and independent color palettes for easy provisional painting, with smooth performance even for high-definition image data
- Filming: Provides a time sheet-style interface for synthesizing effects using a node tree, handling images at real scale considering resolution (with units such as millimeter)
- Compatibility: Works with both raster and vector images, and provides functions for interconversion between colored binarized TGA sequence images and the OpenToonz format to ensure compatibility with existing workflows.
