What is smartmontools?

The smartmontools package provides two utility programs, smartctl and smartd, that enable users to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) system built into most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks. These utilities can often provide advanced warning of disk degradation and impending failure, allowing users to proactively address potential issues before data loss or system downtime occurs
