What is Windows Server 2012?

Windows Server 2012, the sixth release of Windows Server, is the server version of Windows 8 and successor to Windows Server 2008 R2. Developed with two pre-release versions, a developer preview and a beta, the software became generally available to customers on September 4, 2012. Unlike its predecessor, Windows Server 2012 no longer supports Itanium-based computers and offers four distinct editions. This version introduces a variety of improvements and new features, including an updated Hyper-V, IP address management capabilities, a new Windows Task Manager, and the ReFS file system. While the operating system incorporates a Metro user interface similar to Windows 8, it has generally received positive reviews for these functional enhancements
