What is Xfe?

X File Explorer (Xfe) is a lightweight file manager for the X Window System, designed to provide a simple and efficient way to navigate and manage files on Unix-like operating systems. Inspired by the popular, but now discontinued, X Win Commander, Xfe has been actively developed since 2002 by Roland Baudin, a French Linux enthusiast

Highlights

  • Lightweight and fast: Xfe requires only the FOX library to function, making it a resource-efficient option for older systems or users with a preference for a more minimalist desktop environment
  • Command-line integration: Xfe can be launched from the command line and efficiently execute terminal commands, catering to the needs of console-oriented users
  • Desktop-independent: Unlike some feature-rich file managers that are tightly coupled with specific desktop environments, Xfe can be used independently, avoiding the need to load unnecessary bloat onto the system.
